Giving your dog treats is one of the many ways to keep them happy, reinforce positive behaviours and to help take care of their health. The right dog treats for your pup will depend on many factors, read on to discover some key information of dog treats from our pet experts.

How many treats per day for a dog?
We recommend that your dog should not consume more than 10% of their calorie intake in treats per day. This equates to approximately 1-2 high value treats, therefore we suggest you choose the right moment to give them a treat and keep the rest of their calorie intake as their usual food. If you're wanting to give your dog treats as a form of training we suggest using individual pieces of their kibble as a positive reinforcement reward as this will prevent from an excessive amount of calories being consumed.

What are the best healthy dog treats?
Healthy dog treats can come in many forms, whether they are for pure delicious taste or to support your dog's dental health, there's a variety to choose from. Some human foods can be used as healthy dog treats such as, apples, bananas, watermelon, strawberries and a variety of vegetables. However, if you choose to give human food as a treat we recommend doing so in small doses to see how their GI tract responds. Other healthy dog treats can be found from brands such as, Pet Munchies, Natures Menu and Virbac Veggiedent.

How to make frozen dog treats?
Frozen dog treats are a great way to keep your pup occupied for long periods of time whilst also providing a healthy and tasty treat. One of the ways we suggest making frozen dog treats is using a Lickimat. Fill your chosen Lickimat with a variety of foods and treats and add a little water to the top - place this in your freezer for a few hours until frozen. A frozen Lickimat will help to provide mental enrichment as well as a delicious treat that will occupy them for hours - if you don't have a Lickimat, a dog bowl filled with treats such as peanut butter, bananas and your usual dog food topped with water will also work well.
